How To Declutter Like Marie Kondo

If you want to declutter Marie Kondo style – that is, like a pro – then the good news is that once you get started, it’s quite easy to keep the momentum going.

Looking for an easy, free and straightforward way to reduce the amount of stress present in your life? Taking the time to declutter your home environment may be a good place to start. Medical experts believe that getting rid of excess stuff and doing a ‘cull’ can benefit your mental health, by making you feel calmer, happier, and more in control. The idea is that a tidier living or working space can make for a more relaxed mind, which more often than not also means a happier mind.

As a result, it should come as no surprise that the art of decluttering can also be big business, and Marie Kondo is living proof of this. While Kondo is known universally as quite literally a professional organiser, the Japanese icon is also an author and television host – you’re probably familiar with her thanks to her Netflix series, “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo”

Thousands of people around the world have tuned in obsessively to watch her transform lives through the magic of decluttering, and many of us have found ourselves approaching the items within our own homes with ‘does this spark joy’? If the answer is yes, it stays – but if it’s a no, it’s got to go. While this may feel ruthless on the surface, the idea is to simplify how we approach cleaning and decluttering while still retaining our ingrained sense of sentimentality – but what other tips should we remember when trying to tackle this task?

Five Tips On Decluttering Like A Pro

Much of what Marie Kondo practices is tied back to the KonMari method of organising, which is one that she established herself. The concept is to encourage people to get rid of items that no longer have a purpose, but to still retain items that are purposeful and meaningful. While it’s considered to be a rather rigid declutter method to deploy and may not be suitable for everyone, there are still plenty of pearls of wisdom that can be extracted and embraced accordingly.

Tackle Your Clothes – This is a big one for many people, particularly women. Depending on the item’s value or sentimental nature, start by determining which clothes you actually wear. To identify them, simply hang all your clothes with hangers in the reverse direction. After wearing an item, face the hanger in the correct direction, and you will soon know which need to go.

Declutter By Category – Many of us make the mistake of trying to declutter by room or location instead of by category. As an example, if you’re trying to conquer your book collection, they may be scattered all throughout your house. By addressing those books by category and not location, it forces you to take stock of which are actually important to you vs which are not.

Fill A Bag – We all have to start somewhere when we’re trying to declutter, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed if you don’t want to commit to a full scale plan. Instead, grab a garbage bag and fill it with items that you no longer use or need, and donate it to a charitable organisation. Although slightly more chaotic, you’ll still finish with less than you started with.

The Four Box Method – Get four boxes and label them: rubbish, donate, keep, or storage. Enter any room in your home and place each item into one of the following boxes. Don’t skip a single item, no matter how insignificant you might think it is. This may take a while, but it will help you see how many items you really own and you’ll know exactly what to do with each item.

Think Of Your Lifestyle – According to Marie Kondo herself, tidying is a powerful tool, but it’s not the destination. Try to envision what you could do with your room or space with less clutter – make a vision board, take before and after photos, whatever it takes to associate cleaning and decluttering with a lifestyle and a space that you ultimately want.

Once you start your decluttering mission, many people also quickly discover the amount of dust or dirt that these hidden corners of your home can accumulate if left to their own devices. As such, decluttering and general cleaning are often linked. However, if the latter feels all a bit too much to deal with, it may be time to enlist the professionals.
